Semidiurnal Tidal Currents Measured with Ocean Surface Radar around Isahaya Bay Mouth in Ariake Sound, Japan

چکیده
Ariake Sound, in Kyushu Island of western part of Japan and connecting the small bay, Isahaya Bay, in the northwestern (Fig. 1) is strongly affected by large semidiurnal tide of which amplitude ranges from 3 to 5 m [3]. While Ariake Sound exhibits highly productive, red tides have occurred more frequently around the northern area of Isahaya Bay Mouth, causing damage to the sheries, recently [1]. The accurate and ne-scale tidal currents variability is generally important to evaluate water quality because estuary attributes such as salinity and temperature distributions are strongly affected by the tidal mixing and tidal exchange [4]. The motivation of the present work is the observation of ne-scale Semidiurnal Tidal Current (STC) variations around Isahaya Bay mouth in Ariake Sound with Ocean Surface Current Radar (OSCR), which enables us to measure surface currents with a high spatial and temporal resolution.

Mechanism of chlorophyll-a appearance and its locality in the intensive study area of the Ariake Sea, Japan in winter seasons is clarified by using remote sensing satellite data. Through experiments with Terra and AQUA MODIS data derived chlorophyll-a concentration and truth data of chlorophyll-a concentration together with meteorological data and tidal data which are acquired for 6 years (wint...
متن کاملTracking Freshwater Plume Using Ocean Radar in Ariake Bay, Japan
A freshwater discharge from a river is a crucial factor to understand water circulation and ecological system near the river mouth due to the changes of seawater density and the nutrient supply for the ocean. Therefore, water pollution such as red tide is strongly dependent upon the amount of water discharged from river and the pathways of them. It is clear that there is a need to understand th...
متن کاملNOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Current Patterns on the West Florida Shelf from Joint Self-Organizing Map Analyses of HF Radar and ADCP Data
To assess the spatial structures and temporal evolutions of distinct physical processes on the West Florida Shelf, patterns of ocean current variability are extracted from a joint HF radar and ADCP dataset acquired from August to September 2003 using Self-Organizing Map (SOM) analyses. Three separate ocean– atmosphere frequency bands are considered: semidiurnal, diurnal, and subtidal. The curre...
متن کاملThe correlation between surface drifters and coherent structures based on high-frequency radar data in Monterey Bay
This paper investigates the transport structure of surface currents around the Monterey Bay, CA region. Currents measured by radar stations around Monterey Bay indicate the presence of strong, spatial and temporal, nonlinear patterns. To understand the geometry of the flow in the bay, Lagrangian coherent structures (LCS) are computed. These structures are mobile separatrices that divide the flo...
متن کاملSimultaneous CODAR and OSCR Measurements of Ocean Surface Currents in Monterey Bay
Presently, three Coastal Ocean Dynamics Applications Radars, or CODARs, which are ocean surface current measuring radars, are operated around Monterey Bay, California and provide data hourly to an ONR-funded real time environmental monitoring system operated through UC Santa Cruz known as REINAS. CODARs operate using Bragg scatter of high frequency (HF) radio waves from the sea surface to infer...
